The MacArthur Competence Assessment Tool Criminal Adjudication

The MacArthur Competence Assessment Tool–Criminal Adjudication (MacCAT-CA) uses 22 structured interview questions to assess, before trial, whether a defendant is competent to proceed. Using a story-based vignette and objectively scored questions, it measures three abilities: understanding how the legal system and trial process work, reasoning about relevant information and about the choice between pleading guilty and not guilty, and appreciating one's own legal situation. It takes 20 to 55 minutes, and the kit contains the manual and 20 interview booklets.
