The Dot Counting Test
The Dot Counting Test (DCT) by Kyle Boone and David Herzberg is a brief check of effort during testing, for people aged 17 and over. Counting dots is an overlearned skill that survives all but the most severe brain injuries, so poor performance points to low effort, whether deliberate, as in malingering, or not. In the validation study it separated patients suspected of poor effort from groups who were trying their best, among them people with stroke, head injury, mild dementia, depression, schizophrenia or learning disability. It takes 5 to 15 minutes, and the kit contains the manual, a reusable stimulus booklet and 50 record forms.
