The Test of Written Language, Fourth Edition (TOWL-4), by Donald D. Hammill and Stephen C. Larsen, is a detailed diagnostic test of written expression for students aged 9 to 17. It identifies students who write poorly and need special help, shows strengths and weaknesses in different writing skills, and tracks progress in writing programmes and research. It was normed on 2,505 people from 18 US states, takes 60 to 90 minutes, individually or in groups, and the kit contains the examiner's manual, 3 large colour picture cards, 50 record and story scoring forms, 25 student response booklets for each of Forms A and B, and a practice scoring booklet.
