The Survey of Pain Attitudes (SOPA) by Mark P. Jensen and Paul Karoly shows what adults with chronic pain, aged 21 to 80, believe about their pain. Patients rate their agreement with 57 statements, which yield adaptive belief scales, control and emotion, and maladaptive ones: medical cure, medication, harm, solicitude and disability. It can be used before treatment to judge whether it is needed, before and after to judge its effect, and at intervals to record progress; it takes 10 to 15 minutes, and the kit contains the professional manual, 25 rating forms, 25 score summary and profile sheets and 25 pain worksheets.
