A. Velayudhan's Mobile Phone Addiction Scale, for people aged 20 and above, borrows its approach from the DSM-IV-TR criteria for substance dependence to look at problem use of mobile phones. Its 37 items fall into six dimensions: usage time, impulsivity, peer relationship, interpersonal relations, self-expression and maladaptive usage. It helps researchers and counsellors in schools and colleges spot phone use that goes with poorer mental health, social withdrawal and strained relationships. It takes 15 to 20 minutes, and the kit contains a manual and 100 answer sheets.
