Clinical Assessment Scale for the Elderly (CASE)

The Clinical Assessment Scale for the Elderly (CASE), by Cecil R. Reynolds and Erin D. Bigler, screens adults aged 55 to 90 for the psychological disorders most common in later life. There is a self-rating form and a form for a caregiver who knows the person well, such as a spouse, grown child or home health worker, which can confirm the person's account or stand in when illness or cognitive decline prevents self-report. Its 10 clinical scales cover depression, anxiety, cognitive competence, somatisation, paranoia, psychoticism, mania, obsessive-compulsive symptoms, substance abuse and fear of ageing, and the items avoid gender and ethnic bias. It takes 20 to 40 minutes, and the kit includes the manual, 25 reusable item booklets and 25 answer sheets for each form, and 50 profile forms.
